On December 10th, Western Kentucky and other parts of the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States were devastated by one of the deadliest tornadoes in recorded history. Towns were leveled and hearts were broken as the tornado swept through the area, claiming nearly 100 lives and destroying thousands of homes.
This unforeseen event hit close to our home of Lexington, KY – touching down in towns that included Mayfield, Bowling Green, and Dawson Springs. Many of our employees are from all over Kentucky and have friends and family who are reeling from this catastrophe. And while the right words may never come after tragic events, our actions in response to tragedy are what matter most. In addition to listening to and learning from these communities, Tempur Sealy quickly offered immediate and long-term relief to help tornado victims begin to rebuild their lives.
Through our partnership with Good360 – a charitable organization dedicated to assisting communities impacted by natural disasters or other challenging life circumstances – we’ve pledged to deliver mattresses to those affected by the tornado. We’ve provided our employees with the resources to volunteer and donate and have sent critical supplies to Western Kentucky. A team at our headquarters also organized a Friends & Family Sale, with all proceeds going toward disaster relief. The sale alone raised $27,000 in just one day and was matched by the Tempur Sealy Foundation, bringing the total donation to $54,000. These fundraising efforts are a shining example of the difference we can make when we come together during difficult times.
The core values at the heart of Tempur Sealy inspire and empower us to lend a hand whenever we’re needed. We stand by these values but are especially convicted in hardship: We care about each other and we do the right thing.
